The first American convoy of military aid arrived in Romania last night, leaving immediately for the Mihail Kogălniceanu base in Constanța.
U.S. equipment and troops were escorted by local security forces. The convoy is part of the Cougar Task Force, according to the Facebook page of the Romanian Ministry of Defense, which also clarifies that measures were taken to ensure its freedom of movement in traffic.
It is about 15 heavy tonnage vehicles with Stryker armored vehicles. Lieutenant Colonel Ioan Sorin Semeniuc, who was in charge of waiting for the convoy, explained that the equipment came from Germany.
The Pentagon announced last week that 1,000 US troops would be redeployed to the country and to Romania.
Artillery equipment, support structures, as well as engineering units will be added to the Stryker armored vehicles.
In Romania, there are already over 900 US troops under the permanent rotation system. These moves come at a time of escalating tensions on the border with Ukraine, which have raised fears that the conflict could spread further east into Europe.
