A Ukrainian sumo team, whose training was interrupted by the Russian invasion, aims for glory on the world stage in the home of the ancient Japanese sport.
The six-strong Ukrainian team will fly to the US state of Alabama to compete in the World Games.
Sviatoslav Semykras, wrestler: “As for the World Games, I really want to win and show support for our troops, to raise our Ukrainian flag and play our anthem, for the glory of our country, to show support.”
Ivanna Berezovska: “It is terrible what is happening in our country. People are dying, infrastructure is being destroyed, sports complexes are being destroyed. Rockets are falling all over the country, no place is quiet.”
The team had just finished a training session at their base in the city of Kharkiv when Russia launched its invasion in late February and the city was bombed.
There are around 3,000 people involved in the sport of sumo in Ukraine and the country has been one of the most successful since the sport made its official World Games debut in 2005.
