Austria will lift almost all restrictive measures against coronavirus from March 5, with the exception of requirements for the placement of masks in certain areas, the government announced today.
Opening hours of bars and restaurants earlier will be canceled, nightclubs will be allowed to reopen and restrictions on major events will be lifted, Chancellor Karl Nehammer said.
“We have not yet overcome the pandemic,” Nehammer warned, adding that the situation had improved enough, especially in hospitals to guarantee a dramatic easing of restrictive measures against Covid-19 in public life.
“Changing a rule that will take effect on Saturday, proof of vaccination or cure by Covid-19 to enter restaurants, sports facilities and large gatherings will be removed,” said Health Minister Wolfgang Mückstein.
Coronavirus vaccinations became mandatory for the general adult population in Austria earlier this month, the strict measure in Europe. Currently, the vaccination rate is 70 percent.
