The Austrian parliament today debated a proposal to make Covid-19 vaccines mandatory for adults, also backed by Health Minister Wolfgang Mückstein, who sees the vaccines as an act of solidarity.
“The more people are vaccinated against Covid-19, the less they will die from the consequences of the coronavirus pandemic,” the minister said at the beginning of the session in the lower house of parliament.
A clear majority is expected to support the legislation. The law will enter into force in early February. Opposition leader and epidemiologist Pamela Rendi-Wagner has backed the plan. “Vaccination saves lives, your life and the lives of others,” said the Social Democrat.
A total of around € 1 billion ($ 1.1 billion) will be made available for a range of schemes aimed at stimulating and rewarding vaccinations. These include a lottery that gives 500 euros through coupons available in stores and restaurants for approximately one in ten people who get the vaccine.
To boost vaccination, communities with a vaccination rate of 80 per cent will have 75m euros distributed by lot, while a community with a 90 per cent rate will receive 300m euros.
