Authorities in Austria warned today of a “significant” risk of avalanches in the west of the country after nine people lost their lives within 24 hours.
Police said eight people died in three separate incidents in the states of Vorarlberg and Tyrol on Friday. In the avalanche near the Austro-Swiss border, four Swedish citizens and their Austrian guide lost their lives.
Today, Tyrol authorities reported the death of one person near the village of Schmirn in an avalanche, while another person is missing.
Officials warned skiers out in the Alps that even light tremors could cause an avalanche.
