Australia has suspended for the second time the residence permit for tennis player Novak Djokovic.
Immigration Minister Alex Hawke’s decision means that the athlete, who entered Australia unvaccinated, could be deported and thus not participate in the “Australia Open”.
However, the 34-year-old Serb can continue the legal challenge to stay in the country.
Djokovic was barred from entering last week because he was not vaccinated. He said his infection with Covid in mid-December met the requirements for foreigners entering Australia, but authorities revoked his visa on the grounds that it was not a valid exception.
Djokovic was held in immigration detention in Melbourne for five days as he challenged the deportation order.
On Monday a court overturned the cancellation of government visas after finding that immigration officials had not followed proper procedure.
