Australia has said it officially considers koalas “endangered”, while authorities are working to combat the effects of fires, drought and disease.
Conservatives have said koala populations have shrunk across much of Australia in the past two decades, warning that there is a risk of extinction.
Environment Minister Sussan Ley has said she considers the koala population to be endangered in order to offer them better protection in New South Wales and Queensland.
The koala, known worldwide as a symbol of Australia’s unique animals, has been considered “vulnerable” for the past decade.
“We will take unprecedented measures to protect koalas,” she said, noting that the current government has pledged $ 35 million to protect and preserve the koala environment.
Environmentalists have welcomed the new status for koalas, but have condemned Australia’s failure to protect these species so far.
According to the Scientific Committee on Endangered Species, the number of koalas has dropped from 185 thousand in 2001 to only 92 thousand in 2021.
