Australia has passed the world’s first law aimed at making Google and Facebook pay for news content on their platforms.
The news code legislation was fiercely opposed by American tech giants. Last week Facebook blocked all news content for Australians, but changed the decision this week after negotiations with the government.
Following the talks, the law was passed with new changes which make it possible for Facebook and Google not to be subject to the code. However, both companies have now pledged to pay lucrative sums to several major Australian publishers. These deals are widely seen as a compromise by tech giants.
Australian law is seen as a possible test case for similar regulations in other countries to receive payments from digital news platforms. The amended legislation was passed in the House of Representatives this Thursday, having previously passed through the Senate, says the BBC.
