A Myanmar court – also known as Burma – on Monday sentenced ousted leader Aung San Suu Kyi to four years in prison.
She has been convicted of illegal possession and importation of radio communications as well as violating the rules for fighting the coronavirus pandemic.
Suu Kyi was initially sentenced in December last year to two years in prison.
She has been under house arrest since the military coup, which took place on February 1 last year, and has since faced charges for which she has been convicted.
Some have commented on the sentences against her as unjustified.
Monday’s allegations are believed to be a consequence of the day of the coup – when she was arrested – and her house was raided by the forces of General Min Aung Hlaing, who said they had found the equipment.
Monday’s court hearing was held behind closed doors and the ousted leader’s lawyers were barred from communicating with the media and the public.
The latest verdict means she will stay in jail for six years.
Last month, Nobel Laureate Suu Kyi was found guilty of inciting dissidents and violating coronavirus rules.
This decision was considered “shameful” by the head of the United Nations for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet./REL/
