US special forces have pursued high-ranking jihadists during raids in northwestern Syria on Thursday, leaving 13 people dead.
The Pentagon has described the operation as “successful”.
The operation is believed to be the largest of its kind carried out by US forces in the jihadist-controlled Idlib region since 2019, when the leader of the Islamic State (IS) militant group, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, was killed.
The targets of the operation carried out in the town of Atme, which according to residents lasted for two hours, are not yet known.
Some residents have said that US forces did not target IS operatives, but members of the jihadist group, Al-Qaeda.
“The US special operation, under the control of US Central Command, has carried out a counter-terrorism mission in northwestern Syria,” Kirby said.
“The mission has been successful. “There are no victims,” he said, without providing additional details.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said seven civilians were among the 13 people killed in the operation.
