The head of the German Society of Immunology calls on the authorities to change their minds about the AstraZenaca vaccine by allowing its application, even to persons over 65 years of age.
In an interview with the BBC, Dr Carsten Watzl called on regulators to reverse the decision not to recommend the vaccine for the elderly.
According to him, Chancellor Angela Merkel should get the ‘live’ vaccine on television to test her safety.
The immunologist cites studies conducted in Scotland, according to which the AstraZeneca vaccine was effective in the elderly.
Germany is one of the few EU countries that has expressed skepticism about the effectiveness of the vaccine in old age. French President Emanuel Macron also said in January that the AstraZeneca vaccine was almost ineffective in the elderly, a claim denied by the UK and the company itself.
