In the capital of Georgia, Tbilisi, the foreign ministers of Armenia and Azerbaijan held today the first bilateral meeting since the serious conflict of 2020 over the Nagorno-Karabakh region.
The talks are expected to prepare the territory for an agreement between the two enemy countries of the Caucasus, which, with the mediation of the EU, are advancing towards a peace treaty.
“This is the first meeting between the foreign ministers and we hope it will yield results,” Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev said yesterday in anticipation of the talks.
The atmosphere is still tense between the countries as the defense ministries have exchanged accusations for other clashes on the common border.
The meeting between Armenian Minister Ararat Mirzoyan and Azeri counterpart Jeyhun Bayramov is the first after two wars in 2020 and in the 1990s over the Nagorno-Karabakh region, located in Azeri territory, with an Armenian population.
Six weeks of war in the summer of 2020 claimed the lives of more than 6,500 people and ended with a ceasefire brokered by Russia.
In the deal, Armenia surrendered large swathes of territory it had held for decades, and Russia has deployed 2,000 peacekeepers to monitor the ceasefire.
