Forest fires continue to wreak havoc across Argentina as high temperatures and winds help spread them, authorities announced on Wednesday, the Anadolu Agency (AA) reports.
According to the National Fire Management Service (NSFF), active fires have been recorded in the provinces of Corrientes, Cordoba, Misiones and Rio Negro.
But authorities said they had managed to bring several fires under control across the country. In recent weeks, the South American country has been hit by drought and an extreme heat wave, making it difficult for firefighters to put out fires.
According to authorities, a fire remains active in Ituzaingo, in the north of the province of Corrientes which borders Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay.
Fires in the town of Aristobulo del Valle in the northern province of Mission remain active along with those in the southern province of Rio Negro and the Bariloche area that began on December 7 after lightning strikes as well as fires in the Independencia department in Cordoba.
Authorities said several fires in the northern province of Santa Fe have been brought under control.
But they said there were fires in the provinces of Santa Fe, Jujuy, Salta, Neuquen, San Luis, Tierra del Fuego, Formosa, Catamarca and Chaco.
The government of President Alberto Fernandez has pledged to provide about 800 million pesos (US $ 7.7 million) for the provinces of Rio Negro, Neuquen, Chubut and Misiones, which have been hardest hit by the fires.
Since December, fires in the province of Rio Negro (Patagonia) have burned more than 6,000 hectares.
In late December, the federal government confirmed that fires in Patagonia are linked to climate change.
Due to high summer temperatures in Argentina, firefighters have been engaged across the country in recent weeks to fight fires that have engulfed 9 of the country’s 23 provinces.
On January 12, the Argentine government declared a state of emergency for a period of one year due to the ongoing situation.
