Several thousand protesters opposing restrictions and forced vaccinations of Covid-19 in Bulgaria clashed today (Wednesday, January 12, 2022) with police guarding the country’s parliament in the capital Sofia.
The large police presence prevented the protesters from entering the building and some of them were arrested.
Several dozen injured were reported in the clashes, but as a result the protesters were pushed back by law enforcement who then surrounded the building.
Violence similar to that in Romania for the same reasons began in a protest organized by a nationalist group that strongly opposes forced vaccination, masks and anti-epidemic measures by the Bulgarian government.
“The purpose of the protest is to remove the restrictive measures and first of all the anti-constitutional tool the green certificate”, said before the protest the organizer Kostadin Kostadinov, of the Vazrazhdane party.
The nationalist group holds 13 seats in the 240-seat parliament and has won support from opponents of the coronavirus restrictions.
More than 1,000 national-flag protesters chanting patriotic songs continued to stand in front of the National Assembly square, saying they would remain there until the mandatory vaccination and other restrictions were lifted.
Bulgaria is one of the least vaccinated countries in the European Union with only one third of the population, writes FoxNews.
Prime Minister Kiril Petkov, who was isolated at home after contact with a suspicious person, called for calm and invited representatives of the protesters to discuss the demands.
