British police say they have been working since the morning to close a protest by “animal rights” activists at a meat industry conference.
Protesters had confronted angry farmers as one of them sprayed them with cow dung fertilizer pump.
The incident took place outside the headquarters of the Farmers Auction in Darlington where one of the protesters ended up being sent to the hospital for treatment.
Images of the event showed masked activists climbing onto the roof of the building holding placards and lighting colored torches.
A farmers’ spokesman said the activists then ended up covered in dung after someone had used the fertilizer pump on them.
Another activist was reportedly injured when farmers had advanced towards them with a tractor.
The “animal rights” group said their protest was peaceful and sought to emphasize “animal suffering and environmental awareness”.
But he added: “We were released cow dung by a farmer who used a machine. It was a peaceful protest but many angry farmers gathered. “They smeared our clothes with dung, insulted and shouted at us, tore down our banners.”
But the representative of the farmers’ association, Mark Dent, said that the protesters were “a source of intimidation”.
“We respect the right of everyone to protest, but the way they do it does not help their cause. They have no respect for the property and income of others.
“When one loses the moral ground… it is like jumping up and down on a sheet metal roof and it just comes and goes.”
“They had masked faces, that was intimidating behavior.”
