The world’s longest-lived male giant panda in a zoo, An An, has died at the age of 35, according to the Hong Kong Zoo.
An An’s health had deteriorated in recent weeks and he was euthanized with the help of veterinarians early Thursday morning, according to a statement from Ocean Park Zoo and Amusement Park.
It states that he was equal to 105 years old in human years and that the difficult decision to kill him was made in consultation with Chinese experts.
Born in mainland China’s Sichuan province, An An was one of the pandas donated to Hong Kong by Beijing to celebrate the second anniversary of the city’s handover from Britain in 1999.
He and his wife Jia Jia spent the rest of their lives in Ocean Park.
Jia Jia held the Guinness World Records for oldest living panda and oldest panda ever to live in a zoo when she died aged 38 in 2016.
The average lifespan of a panda in the wild is 14-20 years, according to the World Wildlife Fund.
After Jia Jia’s death, her surviving husband led a rather solitary life – in 2021, he celebrated his 35th birthday alone with a Haagen-Dazs fruitcake and bamboo ice, surrounded by a number of birthday cards handmade by Park staff.
