Amnesty International claims to have documented numerous war crimes committed by Russian forces in communities around the Ukrainian capital, Kiev, including arbitrary executions, bombings of residential areas and cases of torture.
“The types of crimes committed by Russian forces that we have documented include unlawful attacks and deliberate killings of civilians,” said Agnes Callamard, the organization’s secretary general. “It is essential that those responsible, including the chain of command, be brought to justice,” she said. Amnesty has amassed evidence in eight cities near Kiev, including Bucha.
After Russian forces withdrew there in April, lifeless bodies were found in the streets, some with their hands tied behind their backs, others in mass graves. According to the governor of the Kiev region, Oleksandr Pavlyuk, at least 1,235 killed civilians have been found in the area.
The Amnesty International report also shows the murder of 53-year-old Yevhen Petrashenko, who was shot dead in the back in the kitchen of his house, while his wife and children were hiding in the basement. According to Amnesty International, the executions in Bucha were carried out by specialized rifles used by Russian elite units.
