The alarm over the conflict in Ukraine seems to have led to “dramatic” illustrations, including images from popular online games such as ‘Arma III’ or ‘Digital Combat Simulator’, which are circulating online as videos from Ukraine. ”
Already some of the videos that are circulating have been denounced as fake, coming from simulated war games on the network.
A report by Bloomberg magazine has revealed that some of the most viewed images on the Facebook gaming network are being distributed as “field views of the military conflict in Ukraine.”
Some of the fake videos were viewed more than 110,000 times and distributed more than 25,000 before being reported as such and deleted, the network says.
But as they spread, they often ended up on other social networks with headlines like ‘Ukraine launches missiles against Russian planes’ or ‘Fierce war in the skies of Ukraine’.
In one of the most evident videos, a military plane was seen bombing, avoiding the unstoppable fire of the defense systems, which later turned out to be taken from the military simulation game ‘Arma III’.
Another video released today (Friday) was supposed to show air warfare between a Ukrainian MiG-29 aircraft and a Russian SU-35 fighter jet, where the latter was destroyed by a missile.
An English comment on Twitter praised the pilot known as the “Kiev fame” – who according to local news “shot down 6 Russian planes”.
But in fact the footage came from the ‘Digital Combat Simulator’ program, about which the model maker said that although they may seem realistic, they highlight the ongoing problem with social media and information in the context of the conflict in Ukraine.
In the age of paid clicks, public fear and hunger for “information” in moments of panic, a lot of misinformation or inaccurate descriptions, appear as a real situation on the ground.
