US intelligence says up to 60% of Russian high-precision-guided missiles are failing on certain days.
Three US officials aware of the intelligence made the statement to Reuters. Such information may help to explain why Russia has not achieved its basic objectives since the start of its attack a month ago, e.g. the neutralization of Ukraine’s air force, despite the apparent strength of its army against the neighboring country’s much smaller armed forces.
Speaking on condition of anonymity, officials did not provide evidence to support this assessment and did not disclose what exactly was causing the high rate of Russian missile failure. Reuters news agency failed to independently verify the figures, while the Russian Defense Ministry did not respond to a request for comment.
It is thought that such a high rate of failure could involve everything from launch defects to missiles that do not explode on strike. The Pentagon estimates that Russia has launched more than 1,100 missiles of all kinds since the start of the war.
