The US Ambassador to Tirana, Yuri Kim, shared on twitter a message from the first US Ambassador to Albania in 1991-1994, William Edwin Ryerson.
Diplomat Ryerson recalls a very touching moment when an Albanian policeman burst into tears as he listened to Secretary Baker say, “We are with you and you are with us.”

As we approach the end of 2021, which marks the 30th anniversary of the re-establishment of relations between the United States and Albania, I wanted to share this message from Ambassador Ryerson, especially starting at 2:09: “One of the most telling moments happened during Baker’s visit. While the Secretary was speaking, I was standing next to the motorcade cars, next to a tall, emaciated policeman. “As Baker said, ‘We are with you and you are with us,’ I saw a tear flow down the policeman’s face.” This landmark moment narrated by Ambassador Ryerson is as powerful, important, and true today as it was 30 years ago.
