Officials in Serbia have demanded through a statement that the state take action to find out who attempted to assassinate Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic.
Earlier, Vuçiç, invited by the Serbian private television, Pink, confirmed that he had received information about the assassination attempt against him from Europol, the European police agency.
A statement from the Vojvodina regional government issued on January 24th called on state authorities to do everything possible to identify those who allegedly prepared Vucic’s assassination.
Earlier, the Minister of Energy of Serbia, Zorana Mihajlovic, stated that the threats to assassinate the President of Serbia, pose a security problem for the whole country.
The information about the assassination attempt was initially published by the Minister of Interior of Serbia, Aleksandar Vulin.
On January 21, Vulin said that through Europol, the police of a European country informed the Ministry of Interior of Serbia about the creation of an organized criminal group, “the purpose of which is the assassination, ie the assassination of the President of the Republic of Serbia, “Aleksandar Vuçiiç”.
Suspect: Switzerland
As Vulin explained, after checking the authenticity of the information, together with the representatives of Europol and partner services, a comprehensive action was launched to determine the identity of this “criminal organization”.
“At the head of this criminal organization is the Montenegrin citizen, Radoje Switzerland, for whom Serbia has already issued an arrest warrant; is the organizer and one of the leaders of the Kavaç clan, responsible for smuggling and illegal sale of drugs, but also organizing and ordering several murders committed in the territory of the Republic of Serbia, Montenegro, but also in other countries. said Vulin.
He added that investigations will determine whether Radoje Switzerland organized this criminal group at its discretion, or at the behest of its political chief.
Vulin did not say who he was referring to when he mentioned Radoje’s Swiss political chief.
“Until then, members of the MIA and the Information Security Agency will inform the Organized Crime Prosecutor’s Office of any information they may receive through operational work.“, Said Vulin.
The prosecution has not commented on these statements.
On January 21, the Prime Minister of Serbia, Ana Bernabic, confirmed for the Serbian television, Prva, that she was informed about the possible assassination attempt against the President of Serbia and that he was planned, according to her, for the first half of February.
Serbian Defense Minister Nebojsa Stefanovic has said that the military security services and the Kobra special unit will do everything “to prevent any threat to the president”.
Who is Switzerland?
On May 21, 2021, Montenegro issued an international arrest warrant for Radoje Switzerland, on suspicion that, along with nine other people, he had formed a criminal organization and committed aggravated murder.
Switzerland is mentioned in the media as one of the leaders of the “Kavaç Clan” – one of the two Kotor clans from Montenegro.
Switzerland itself survived the assassination attempt in Ukraine in May 2020, when, according to Ukrainian police, it was shot by four executors: two from Serbia and two from Montenegro.
According to media reports, Switzerland was shot with three bullets in the chest, but was rescued by his wife, Tamara Zvicer, who fired.
“I do not know about the assassinations”
From the time he became the first deputy prime minister in 2012, then for three years as prime minister, until January 2022, when he marked almost five years in the presidency, the media reported on five alleged assassinations of Aleksandar Vucic.
Asked by reporters at the annual press conference about the assassinations against him, Vucic said he did not know of a single case.
“You say there have been assassination attempts, I do not know of any“, Said Vucic on December 29, 2021.
Belivuk sniper
Following the arrest of Velko Belivuk on February 4, 2021 – described in the media as close to the criminal Kavaç clan and accused of aggravated murder, extortion, kidnapping and drug trafficking – a sniper rifle was found on members of his group. ammunition.
Two days later, on February 6, Vulin said that there were several people in Velko Belivuku’s group trained in the use of sniper rifles.
“The sniper rifle is used to eliminate important targets – some of which you may not be able to approach so easily. These are usually state representatives“, Said Vulin at that time.
“If you had killed him, paralyzed the whole country and brought him to a grave political instability, you might even have stopped the fight against the mafia… The only man whose death would have stopped the fight against the mafia , would be Aleksandar Vucic“, Said Vulin.
According to him, the security of the president of Serbia is in danger, because he “has clashed with the most powerful criminals in Europe”.
The indictment of the Prosecution for Organized Crime against Velko Belivuku and 29 others, which entered into force on November 11, 2021, does not mention the assassination attempt on Vucic.
Bernabic for the assassination of Vucic in January, 2021
The Prime Minister of Serbia, Ana Bernabiç, said on October 24, 2021, that during the unveiling of the monument to Prince Stefan Nemanja, in the center of Belgrade, in January 2021, the assassination of President Vuçiç was prepared.
“If they shot Vuçiç, they would make the confession as if it were a natural thing – who knows what he and his family were involved in… It is monstrous how well that network was connected“, Said Bernabic, adding that the responsible services are dealing with the case.
“There will be no defendants, regardless of name, surname, function and party affiliation“, She said.
“(Vuçiiç’s assassination) has been planned for a long time and in detail. “Parallel structures have been set up in the Ministry of Internal Affairs and campaigns have been carried out in the tyrannical media, which have been broadcast by the regional media – to dehumanize Vucic and turn him and his family into a criminal clan.”Bernabic told Pink Television.
She did not provide more details about this case, and there is no information on how the Prosecution acted in this case.
Investigations of 2016 – weapons in Jajince
According to media reports, an “arsenal” of weapons and boxes of ammunition were found in 2016 in a forest in Jajince, a suburb, about 15km south of Belgrade – near the home of Vucic’s parents’s family.
Radio Television of Serbia (RTS) reported at the time that shells, four hand grenades, 100 7.62 mm rounds of ammunition, several bullets for automatic weapons and 10-15 bullets of unknown caliber were found.
According to RTS, the weapons and ammunition were found several hundred meters from the Vucic family home.
At the time, Vucic was Serbia’s prime minister, while Nebojsa Stefanovic, currently defense minister, was interior minister.
A few days later, as part of the investigation into the assassination of Vuçi., The media reported that the police in the New Belgrade neighborhood discovered a stolen vehicle, a Renault Megane, full of weapons.
In this vehicle were found: a revolver, a hackler (automatic rifle), a large amount of ammunition, in two places of 200 grams of explosive Tritol and two mobile phones that could be used as detonators for remote activation of explosives.
At the time, Serbian Interior Minister Nebojsa Stefanovic told RTS that the weapons were “in an ideal location for the attacker”.
“The prime minister (then Vucic) is in a safe place“, Said Stefanovic.
“In a radius of one kilometer (around the village of Jajince), on the day of the discovery of the arsenal of weapons and two days ago, there were 97 senior security officials – which is very unusual“, Said Stefanovic in early November, 2016.
This case has also remained without a judicial epilogue.
As the Serbian portal Insider reported, in August 2017, the High Public Prosecutor’s Office decided that there was no basis for initiating criminal proceedings in the case in Jajince.
Attack on Vucic in Potocari
While serving as Prime Minister of Serbia, Vucic was attacked on July 11, 2015 in Potocari, marking the 20th anniversary of the Srebrenica genocide.
“At one point I was hit with a stone in the mouth, nothing terrible, my glasses fell and were broken,” Vucic said after the incident.
But some media in Serbia have described the incident as an assassination attempt: “Assassination of Vucic in Srebrenica” and “Attempted assassination of Vucic in Potocari” were some of the headlines at the time.
Five years after the incident, in 2020, Vulin criticized the Bosnian authorities, saying they had not found the perpetrators of Vucic’s assassination attempt in Srebrenica.
“Five years have passed since the assassination attempt on Aleksandar Vucic in Srebrenica, no one has been arrested or convicted,” Vulin said in July 2020.
