The Beçisht walkway, built in the time of Ali Pasha, which connects the city of Tepelena with at least 7 villages in the province on the other side of the Vjosa, has serious damage and poses a danger to passers-by.
One of its legs started cracking from the Vjosa erosion years ago while the bridge bed is covered with rotten or broken planks. At least 15 children from the village of Beçisht cross the historic bridge every day to go to the garden or school.
Residents of Beçisht say the closure of the primary school in the village plus road problems are turning into a major concern for life in the area.
The catwalk a major development hub for the whole area requires emergency intervention as it seriously threatens the lives of more than 2000 passers-by who cross it every day. The danger is further related to the loss of a rare monument of the Ali Pasha period.
The Beçisht catwalk with a length of 250 divided into 5 segments is one of the longest in Albania. Built in the time of Ali Pasha it has been partially restored at least three times so far but there has been no serious investment or periodic maintenance.
