Lawyers for the family of the cinematographer who was killed by accidental firing of a weapon in the shooting of the movie “Rust” (Rust) say that the weapon was not needed on stage and that the death of their girlfriend came from lack of organization and carelessness.
They have sued actor Alec Baldwin and the filmmakers over the death.
Halyna Hutchins was killed in October when the gun Baldwin was carrying in her direction fired at his hand. Director Joel Souza was injured in the incident.
Prosecutor Brian Panish said that “irresponsible behavior and cost reductions had led to the tragic death of Halyna Hutchins.”
The family legal group said Baldwin had chosen not to train for the weapon he was using when he shot Hutchins.
Baldwin says he aimed the gun at the Hutchins as instructed, and says he did not pull the trigger.
But family lawyers say the weapon was not needed in that particular scene in the film, where a rubber or wooden imitation could very well have been used.
The film’s gunsmith, Hannah Gutierrez Reed, and actor Baldwin said they had “no idea why there were bullets in the movie’s gun.”
Whereas earlier Gutierrez Reed had sued suppliers of weapons equipment who had brought real bullets instead of fake ones they had ordered.
Investigators have said that in the shooting the use of weapons had been generally careless.
