2021 increased the number of deaths by 10.5% compared to a year before it. In Albania during this year a total of 30,507 people lost their lives, most affected by the Covid-19 virus. During this year we lost more men. An estimated 3,200 more lives are lost than women.
Circulatory diseases remain among the leading causes of death of Albanian citizens. According to INSTAT data for 2021 the group of diseases related to heart problems and ischemia account for 52.4% of total deaths. It is estimated that 568.6 people per 100 thousand inhabitants lose their lives due to these problems. Worrying is the fact that compared to a year ago, this group of diseases has marked an increase of 10.8%.
But there is also an increase in the mortality rate from respiratory diseases by almost 1.5 times. While not lagging behind, the loss of life due to tumor diseases.
The increase in mortality during 2021 according to experts is also influenced by the consequences that covid caused on the general health of the population and a factor that shows this is the increase in the number of mortality from respiratory diseases.
During the pandemic many citizens with serious illnesses skipped treatment due to fear aggravating their health condition.
In a regional estimate, Gjirokastra registers the highest number of deaths per 100 thousand inhabitants, and the main cause is tumors, while the lowest is recorded in Kukës region. Shkodra region has the highest mortality value for the group “Diseases of the circulatory system”, while Durrës region has the lowest value.
