Albanians and Albania, in the eyes of a German photographer, came to the “Marubi” National Photo Gallery through an exhibition by Jutta Benzenberg and under the care of curator Kim Knoppers.
The images and stories narrated create a kind of biography of our country from 1991 when the photographer met Albania for the first time until today.
“In my exhibition you will find different characters which are already part of my personality. Why do I photograph so much in Albania? Because here people are open to show their emotions and I want to be close to them, it fulfills me. I come from Germany and there I was taught not to show my emotions, which is wrong according to me and that’s why I chose Albania, to awaken and show my emotions again. People ask me why after 30 years I am in Albania? I ask myself too. A wise Albanian woman told me: you cannot leave, you have been photographing Albanians for 30 years and already your heart and mind are here.”
Benzenberg, highlights the moment of photographing one of the last brides in our country.
“When foreign journalists come to Albania and meet burnesha women, they want to highlight their masculine side, but I told myself NO. I wanted to show something else, but I didn’t know how to do it myself. I left everything to chance. When I make portraits I want to bring out the spiritual part of people. I started talking to her, I tried to change her hair style a little and slowly she got free, she was calmer, it brought out her femininity. It turned back into a female, but as soon as I took the picture and finished it, the man I met at the beginning immediately returned. That was the most special.”
The exhibition “Albania in focus: now, since 1991…”, which was brought up thanks to the support of the German and Dutch embassies, will remain open to all art lovers until the month of November.
