A mysterious yellow card sent to London Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka at the end of last season’s win over Leeds is being investigated by Britain’s national crime agency suspected of being a major betting scandal.
The British Federation said it had conducted a six-month investigation and then referred the matter to crime agencies on serious suspicions of corruption and criminal activity.
The federation launched its investigation following suspicious moves in the betting odds regarding the possible receipt of a yellow card from Xhaka at the end of Arsenal’s 4-1 win over Leeds on December 18.
The alarm was actually raised by a major ,000 52,000 bet placed during the match that predicted Xhaka would take action in the final 10 minutes of the match, even though Arsenal were winning 4-1.
And in fact the Albanian national team player of Switzerland did this in the 86th minute when the referee punished him because he delayed the ball of a penalty kick.
Footage of the incident shows Xhaka standing on the ball in front of his goal for about 20 seconds without having any desire to throw the ball while being punished with a yellow card by the referee.
The questionable bet was spotted on a betting exchange network, which brought in a profit of five times the amount played, to around ,000 250,000.
Betting companies reported it to the local football federation as the amount was much higher than usual for yellow cards.
Another unexplained aspect of the incident is that the chances of winning were much higher for a yellow card for Xhaka in the last 10 minutes, than they were before the start of the match.
No action has been taken against Xhaka yet.
The 29-year-old midfielder is known for his carelessness towards card penalties as he has been penalized or sent off in red in more than a quarter of matches for the club.
