The head of the Socialist Party parliamentary group, Taulant Balla, said that the first EU-Albania intergovernmental conference would be held next week.
In his speech from the rostrum of the Assembly, Balla said that Albania will now negotiate with the EU to become part of the union.
“Next week, the First EU-Albania Intergovernmental Conference will be held. Albania will now negotiate with the European Union to become part of the union. “The French proposal paves the way for the start of negotiations with the EU of Albania and Northern Macedonia.” said Balla in the Assembly.
Northern Macedonia has accepted the French proposal, thus paving the way for an agreement with Bulgaria. Reaching this agreement would then unblock the negotiation process for Skopje and Tirana, leading to the long-awaited holding of the first government conference.
French President Emmanuel Macron himself at the NATO summit in Madrid, said the parties are close to a compromise.
“We continued our consultations with the Macedonian and Bulgarian authorities, because our commitment to the European perspective of the Western Balkans is that we can finally open the first chapters for Macedonia and Albania. “Based on these consultations, I am convinced that we have found a compromise solution that suits the sensitivities of each state.”
While it is still not clear what exactly the French proposal contains, Macedonian Prime Minister Dimitar Kovacevski reacted by saying that within a few days there will be an answer.
He reiterated that his country’s three main demands for a negotiating framework are: full knowledge of the Macedonian language, historical issues not to be part of the negotiating framework, and for negotiations to begin before the inclusion of Bulgarians, Croats and Montenegrins in the Constitution.
“This proposal, the preparation of which takes into account our positions and requirements, will be put through an extensive consultation process. Consultations in the coming days will be held in the Government, will be held with political parties, the President of the state, the parliament, the civil sector, experts and the general public in the country. After these consultations a decision will be made regarding the proposal“, Says Kovacevski.
