Following the start of the Russian attack on Ukraine, Kosovo President Vjosa Osmani and Prime Minister Albin Kurti announced that they had taken additional security measures.
It was reported that they had met with representatives of security mechanisms – local and international – but no details were given about either the meetings or the measures.
Meanwhile, Kosovo police announced that they have sent today “logistics equipment and containers” at the border crossing Bernjak, which, as he said, will serve the border police. Brnjak is located in the north of Kosovo – a part inhabited by a Serb majority.
Immediately after this move, the office for Kosovo in the Serbian government stated that “the latest police action in the north is contrary to the agreements reached.” The purpose of this action, according to her, is “dangerous provocation” and “destabilization of the situation on the ground.”
The statement of this office states that the Kosovo Police, 80 meters from the crossing in Brnjak, has sent “heavy machinery and people” under the “pretext of strengthening the police checkpoint at the crossing”.
“Such unilateral and irresponsible actions of Pristina have only one goal: to provoke a new destabilization of the situation on the ground, at a very sensitive moment for security, which is facing the whole world,” the statement said.
The office called on Pristina not to provoke Belgrade and Serbs in Kosovo and not to endanger peace and security by violating the agreement.
Two border crossings with Serbia in northern Kosovo – Jarina and Brnjaku – were blocked by local Serbs for two weeks in September last year, following the Kosovo Government’s decision to impose reciprocity measures on vehicles with Serbian license plates.
