The European Union has reminded the countries of the Western Balkans that aligning their positions with EU decisions on foreign policy and security is a central element in their European path.
This was stated in a communiqué issued by the European authorities, after an informal meeting held by the European chief diplomat, Josep Borrell, with senior officials of the Western Balkans.
The communiqué said that the meeting was an opportunity to exchange views on the challenges in the region and the European future of the region.
“The focus of Wednesday’s meeting, May 11, was the global and regional impact of Russia’s illegal and unprovoked war against Ukraine and its people, and how together the EU and its partners in the Western Balkans can address the damage and consequences of “in this war, both in food and energy prices, as well as in regional and global stability”, it is said in this communiqué.
“High Representative Borrell welcomed the full support of Western Balkan partners in the UN General Assembly for resolutions on Russia’s aggression against Ukraine. The High Representative informed them of the EU response in support of Ukraine, including restrictive measures aimed at limiting the Kremlin’s ability to finance the war. He reiterated the importance of aligning with foreign and security policy, as a central element in the European path, “the statement said, adding that” the leaders have reaffirmed their strategic commitment to EU integration and regional co-operation. “
So far, Serbia is the only Western Balkan country that has not backed European Union sanctions on Russia.
The EU has warned that discussions with the Western Balkan countries will continue next week at the level of foreign ministers.
Participants in the dinner in Brussels were: Minister of Foreign Affairs and Diaspora of Kosovo, Donika Gërvalla, President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vuiqiiq, Prime Minister of Albania, Edi Rama, President of Montenegro, Milo ukukanovi,, Prime Minister of Northern Macedonia, Dimitar Kovaçevski , and Bosnia and Herzegovina’s tripartite presidency member Milorad Dodik.
