French actor Gérard Depardieu has spoken today for the first time since allegations of rape and sexual abuse against a young actress were made, saying: “I am innocent.”
The 72-year-old well-known and contested French screen, who has been stationed in Russia for some time, spoke today after prosecutors in Paris confirmed that he will stand trial for the attacks that are supposed to have taken place in his luxury villa in 2018.
“There is no evidence against me so I am very calm,” Depardieu said in an interview with the Italian daily La Repubblica.
“I completely reject the accusations, as I did before the prosecutors.”
Depardieu says the allegations of an unnamed 22-year-old actress were once rejected by judges in a previous investigation.
He said: “Investigations have been closed once because there is no evidence. In court I will reconfirm my innocence. “I have nothing to fear.”
Depardieu is one of the few powerful figures of the Paris Art Center, who have been accused of sexual abuse since the expansion of the #MeToo movement which encourages women to make public their experiences of abuse by powerful people.
Depardieu condemned the media coverage of the case, calling it “an era dominated by the unstoppable flow of false information and bombardment with propaganda.”
“It is as if we live with headphones on, with bad news broadcasts and false or one-sided information,” he said.
