Britain has issued 6,500 visas for Ukrainian refugees, under the new scheme for people fleeing the conflict in Ukraine.
That means 500 more visas than were issued the day before, says the BBC. 27 thousand applications have been submitted in total, according to online data. The British government has also set up another scheme, Home for Ukraine, for people who want to house refugees.
Official London has previously faced harsh criticism, including from its own lawmakers, over the speed and scale of its response to the crisis caused by the Russian occupation of Ukraine. There have been problems with the websites used by the British seeking to house Ukrainian refugees, and the latter themselves have encountered some difficulties in filling out the long form.
Three weeks after Russia invaded Ukraine, more than 3 million people have fled the country, and so far the Interior Ministry has granted visas to only 6,000 Ukrainians to travel to Britain.
The refugee reception scheme launched this week offered hope that the UK’s response to the humanitarian crisis in Ukraine could improve over time, however refugee organizations say they are still not seeing strong initiatives and, according to them, there is no inspirational incentive to harness the goodwill shown by the British to welcome Ukrainians who want to escape the war in their own country.
