Authorities in Mariupol say about 30,000 Ukrainians have fled the city so far, according to Reuters.
According to them, 350,000 are still sheltered in the city, which is surrounded by Russian forces and has faced major explosions.
Reuters reports long lines of cars heading north from Mariupol, some with signs on the windshield with the word “child” written in Russian as a signal that the Russians should not attack.
Ukrainian officials say residents have been stranded in the city by Russian bombings without heat, electricity and running water for the past two weeks.
The city council adds that work is ongoing to determine the number of victims at the Mariupol theater where more than 1,000 people mostly women and children were hiding.
