A Ukrainian fighter still inside the Azovstal steel plant said about 200 civilians remained trapped.
An evacuation took place earlier today after several days of failed attempts, and a group of mostly women and children is heading towards Zaporizhia.
But Captain Sviatoslav Palamar said his fighters could still hear the voices of people, including women, children and the elderly trapped in the rubble.
He said Ukrainian forces were unable to reach them through the rubble.
“We were planning to demolish the walls, the entrance to which is blocked, but throughout Monday night it was being attacked. “Bombs have been dropped all day today.”he said.
An unknown number of Ukrainian civilians and forces have been trapped inside the Mariupol steel plant for weeks.
It has become the last stronghold of the Ukrainian resistance in the city, which has been hit by Russian forces.
