Dritan Abazovic admitted that his statement on the 27th anniversary of the genocide in Srebrenica was “unclear” and for that, he apologized to the families of the victims.
“I apologize to the mothers of Srebrenica for the vaguely expressed opinion. It is known that every work depends on its purpose. My goal is peace. The genocide committed against Bosniaks in Srebrenica should not be repeated against anyone”. said Abazovic.
This reaction of the Montenegrin Prime Minister came after the complaints of the relatives of the victims of genocide, associations and representatives of political parties in the country, according to whom, the head of the executive relativized the genocide in Srebrenica.
“The genocide was not committed against Bosniaks, but against the people, and it was not committed by armies, but by politicians, the politics of evil, the politics of death and the politics of deceit,” he said on the day that marks the 27th anniversary of the massacre. From here, indignation arose, and the families of the victims and the association asked Abazvic to apologize, underlining that the definition of genocide states that it constitutes “the intention to completely or partially destroy a national, ethnic, racial or religious group”.
“Our children were killed just because they were Bosniaks, they were killed by an organized army. In Potoçari, there is no place for relativizing crime,” the “Mothers of Srebrenica” association declared through a tweet. The Srebrenica Memorial Center also asked Abazovic to read the decisions of international courts. “Genocide was committed against Bosniaks – because the motive of the murders was not ‘killing people’, but the killing and destruction of a people”, said its leaders. The controversy comes at a delicate time for Abazovic, whose minority government lost the support of President Milo Gjukanovic’s Democratic Socialist Party, PDS, on Sunday for voting in favor of the basic agreement with the Serbian Orthodox Church.
