Four mathematicians, including Ukrainian Maryna Viazovska, have been awarded the prestigious Fields Medal, the most prestigious prize in mathematics.
This was announced by the jury of the International Mathematical Union on July 5.
Viazovska is the second woman to win this award, which is considered equivalent to the Nobel Prize in mathematics.
The other winners were French mathematician Hugo Duminil-Copin of the University of Geneva, Korean-American mathematician June Huh of Princeton and British mathematician James Maynard of Oxford University.
The Fields Medal is awarded every four years to mathematicians under the age of 40.
Maryam Mirzakhani, a professor of Iranian origin at the University of
Stanford, was the first woman to receive the award for her work in 2014.
She died of breast cancer in 2017.
