A double blast that rocked the airport in the Colombian city of Cucuta today, killing two police officers, was a terrorist attack, said the country’s president Ivan Duque.
“We reject this cunning terrorist attack that took place in the city of Cucuta,” Duque said in a statement, adding that the army and police were doing everything possible to find the perpetrators.
Camilo Daza International Airport in the northeastern area of ’Norte de Santander was hit by two explosions this morning.
The first blast is believed to have occurred accidentally as the perpetrator was trying to plant the bomb inside the airport by crossing a fence. The vehicle is believed to have exploded prematurely, leaving the suspect dead.
A second bomb exploded an hour later when crews of engineers had arrived at the scene, killing two of the officers.
In June, a helicopter carrying President Duque and several other senior Colombian officials was shot dead by unknown assailants near Camilo Daza airport.
The aircraft suffered several blows but managed to land safely on the Cucuta runway.
Several anti-government guerrilla groups operate in Norte de Santander, including the left-wing FARC rebels.
