European scientists have announced that they have proven for the first time that the coronavirus attacks the human stress response system by weakening the adrenal gland response to COVID-19.
Research has shown that the coronavirus attacks the adrenal glands, thus weakening the body’s ability to produce the stress hormones cortisol and adrenaline, which are needed to fight severe infection. Part of the body’s defense system, these glands are needed to survive stressful situations, especially when it comes to coronavirus infection.
The research was published in November in the journal The Lancet Diabetes and Endocrinology by a group of scientists from London, Regensburg, Zurich and Dresden.
“The results of our latest research now show for the first time that the virus significantly affects the human stress response system,” said Stefan Bornstein, director of the Center for Internal Medicine at Dresden University Hospital.
“It is not yet known whether these changes directly contribute to kidney failure or to long-term COVID,” he said, adding that this should be investigated. Recalling that recent studies show that taking steroids prevents disease exacerbation in patients with COVID-19, scientists believe that some medications can help mitigate the effects of coronavirus.
“This evidence highlights the potentially important role of adrenal steroids in the fight against COVID-19,” said scientists from the University of Zurich. The researchers analyzed data collected from 40 patients in Dresden who died of COVID-19 and found that pathohistological analysis of tissue samples showed clear signs of kidney inflammation.
