The former Danish Minister of Immigration has been found guilty today in a rare process, for the separation of some immigrant families according to the strict immigration procedures that the country had in force a few years ago.
The judges ruled that Inger Stoejberg’s 2016 decision to separate several underage married immigrant couples was illegal and sentenced him to 60 days in prison.
Ms Stoejberg said she was surprised by the verdict on a law that was designed to ban underage marriages.
The case raised by Denmark against a former senior official is the first in more than three decades in the country.
“I am not the only one who has lost here, but also the values of Denmark,” Stoejberg said outside the court, adding that she accepts the decision but there are no obstacles to her actions.
From 2015 to 2019, Stoejberg was the immigration minister in the center-right government of Denmark led by the Danish People’s party.
During her tenure she maintained a strict line on immigration, among which was the February 2016 order according to which refugees married at the age of 18 should not be accommodated in an apartment with their partner.
This according to the indictment led to the separation of 23 married couples, although the policy was canceled a few months later.
Today’s decision of the high court leaves Stoejberg’s political career hanging in the balance.
When the verdict was read by Judge Thomas Roerdam, the former minister had let out a cry of astonishment.
Outside the court, prosecutors said they were pleased with the “historic” decision, while Ms Stoejberg’s lawyers said he was exaggerating.
The verdict cannot be appealed and the prison sentence must be served.
