In northern Macedonia, the Social Democratic League today elects its chairman, following the resignation of Zoran Zaev from the post of party leader and prime minister.
Three candidates are running: Dimitar Kovacevski, currently deputy finance minister, Frosina Remenski, a former minister, and Jovan Despotovski, director of a public agency. Mr. Kovacevski has the support of Mr. Zaev and several senior Social Democrat officials to take over the leadership of the party. All members of this party, which are over 50 thousand, have the right to vote.
These are the direct internal elections held for the second time for the election of the party leader. Previously, the president was elected at congress.
The voting took place in 194 centers of the party’s municipal organizations throughout the country and lasted from 8 am to 7 pm. The new Social Democrat leader is expected to receive the mandate to form the new government, ie an expected reformat cabinet, where in addition to the Social Democratic League with its junior partners and the Democratic Union for Integration of the Albanian Democratic Party, the Alternativa party will also be included.
Outgoing Prime Minister Zoran Zaev immediately after the results of the local elections runoff on October 31 announced that he is resigning from the post of party chairman and prime minister due to the deep defeat in this election. He, however, did not formalize his resignation in parliament, where as a result there was a motion of no confidence by the opposition, but which resulted in no success.
Mr Zaev remained at the helm of the party for eight years.
Meanwhile, the other largest Macedonian opposition party VMRO-DPMNE today at its 17th Congress re-elected the current chairman, Hristijan Mickovski for a second term as chairman. He was the only candidate for the post. 489 votes out of 493 delegates present in Congress voted for the re-election of Mr. Mickovski.
The party has heralded a new doctrine; changes of its officials and supervision of the financial activity of the party itself.
