The high intensity rains during the last two days have brought problems in some areas of the country.
From the Mifol bridge, the Minister of Defense, Niko Peleshi, announced that the situation is already under control, the level of the Vjosa River has dropped while several hundred hectares of land in the area of Vlora and Fier have been flooded. About 30 families have been evacuated to avoid any kind of damage.
The Minister, based on the weather forecast from IGJEUM said that it is expected that in the coming hours we will have improvement.
“Today has been a tiring day for all civilian operational forces. We are at the Mifol Bridge where the situation has been the most critical today. It is a bloating of the Vjosa River which has caused flooding in several hundred hectares in the area of Vlora and Fieri, but let’s say that the worst has been avoided compared to the scenarios of previous years, we are talking about several hundred hectares drowned no several thousand. For several days we have been waiting for the situation to escalate, we have also raised the Armed Forces, 75 troops and numerous vehicles throughout the day in the battle with the consequences of the flood. About 30 families have been evacuated to avoid any kind of damage. “In such emergencies we have human life in the first place, we have done our best and we do not have dramatic balances, we have avoided them.”
Peleshi said that across the country hydropower plants are working at full capacity and reservoirs are under control.
“The two investments made in recent years, two embankments, that of Fitore and that of Cerven, without those with this level of water inflows, we would have several thousand hectares flooded. We saved them thanks to these investments and we were quite coordinated. The situation is good, the level at the Mifol bridge has dropped maybe 50 cm, there is no rain, there will be no tomorrow, we expect until the morning, we say to have a drop of 1 m of water. The water is receding, the hydropower plants are at work, and we are at work regardless of the weather for any situation that may arise.
In terms of road infrastructure, traffic continues on all road axes, while in the north, where the situation is more problematic due to snowfall, drivers are forced to move with chains. There have also been power outages in some villages in the north of the country.
“In the north there was snowfall and this has led to power outages in villages, which have been without electricity today. Some roads are difficult to cross, but we have kept all national roads open. The following days will not be days with heavy rainfall, they will come to an end, we are in charge of the works and I want to calm down the residents that our help will not help you “, said the minister.
