A tornado and a system of multiple storms sowed destruction and death last night in the US states of Arkansas, Kentucky, Tennessee, Missouri and Illinois destroying buildings, leaving dozens dead and others trapped in the rubble of buildings.
Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear said the death toll could reach more than 70 people as tornadoes and storms swept across most of the U.S. Midwest.
“We’re dead in some counties,” he told a news conference today.
In Tennessee, two hurricane deaths were reported in the northwest area, said emergency spokesman Dean Flener.
At least 20 people were trapped inside a nursing home that was hit by the tornado.
Aid workers found one person dead and five others seriously injured, authorities added.
Several employees were trapped after a “structural collapse” in an Amazon network warehouse, the network reported Fox 2 in Illinois.
The number of victims and injured may increase as search and rescue efforts continue.
The National Center for Tornadoes and Weather has continued to warn of tornadoes in the region as dangerous atmospheric systems continue northward.
