Firefighters in the Czech Republic battled today to stop a forest fire in the Bohemian National Park near the country’s northern border with Germany.
Czech Minister of the Environment Anna Hubakova said that the situation is critical as the park is the habitat of endangered species such as the Eurasian kestrel and the peregrine falcon.
Even in Germany, officials were preparing for evacuations as fires have engulfed forests in the eastern areas of the country.
Authorities in Saxony issued a “disaster alert” in the Bad Schandau region, as numerous fires have inexplicably ignited across western Europe.
Officials in the Czech Republic said it was not clear when the flames could be brought under control, adding that it could take several days.
About 350 people have been involved in the efforts against the flames, which have involved about 800 hectares of land.
