Russia launched air strikes on Ukraine’s Black Sea regions of Odesa and Mykolaiv on Tuesday, hitting private buildings and port infrastructure along the country’s southern coast, the Ukrainian military said.
Russian forces used air-to-air missiles in the attack, the Southern Ukraine Operational Command said in a Facebook post.
In the Odesa region, a number of private buildings in coastal villages were hit and caught fire, according to the report. In the Mykolaiv region, the attacks targeted the port infrastructure.
Hours after the attacks in the south, an official stationed by Moscow in the southern Kherson region said Russian forces would soon “liberate” the Odesa and Mykolayiv regions, as well as Kherson further east.
The developments come as Ukraine appeared to be preparing a counter-offensive in the south.
Over the weekend, Russia attacked the port of Odesa. The British military said on Tuesday there were no signs a Ukrainian warship and missiles were there, as Moscow had claimed.
Britain’s Ministry of Defense said Russia sees Ukraine’s use of anti-ship missiles as “a key threat” to its fleet in the Black Sea.
The Ukrainian president’s office said on Tuesday that over the past 24 hours, the Russian military had killed at least three civilians and wounded eight others in Ukraine.
