The Minister for Foreign Affairs and Diaspora in Kosovo, Donika Gërvalla, said that Kosovo meets all the prerequisites to apply for the status of a candidate state in the European Union.
“We think that Kosovo meets all the prerequisites for such a candidacy, for such an application, and therefore, by the end of the year, we will choose the appropriate moment when we will also formally submit this application”, said Gërvalla. during a media conference in Pristina on July 26.
Gërvalla said that Kosovo meets the basic prerequisite for application, due to the fact that it has implemented most of the Stabilization and Association Agreement (SAA).
The SAA is the first and only contractual agreement between Kosovo and the EU, which entered into force on April 1, 2016.
This agreement aims to support Kosovo in strengthening democracy and the rule of law.
However, Gërvalla said that just submitting the application is not enough, but added that all institutions must work to push this process forward.
The chief diplomat of Kosovo also spoke about the application to the Council of Europe, where Kosovo submitted the application on May 12.
Gërvalla said that he expects the state to join this institution soon, adding that he hopes that after the summer break the procedures in the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council will start.
“We expect that in the case of Kosovo it will not last as long as it has for the states of the region, because we think that at this stage, Kosovo best meets the prerequisites in terms of legislation, human rights, democratic standards, the state legal, to have the shortest procedure”, said Gërvalla.
She added that Kosovo enjoys political support from a “very large number of member states of the Council of Europe, whether they are recognized or not.
The Council of Europe is an international organization for human rights, democracy and the rule of law in Europe. This institution protects freedom of expression and media, equality and minorities in member states.
According to the procedure, the application of a state is first examined by the Committee of Ministers and after the examination, the Parliamentary Assembly has the final say.
This Assembly consists of representatives of member states.
Acceptance is made with the votes of 2/3 of the majority. The Council of Europe has 47 members./REL
