On July 26, 1963, Skopje was shaken by a powerful earthquake where 1,070 people lost their lives, while three thousand others were injured.
The earthquake destroyed 15,800 buildings and damaged another 28,000. Over 200,000 people were left homeless. The whole world was shocked and engaged by the Skopje tragedy.
The International Red Cross appealed to all organizations for food for the children of Skopje. The implementing union sent a recommendation to all parliaments and governments to help rebuild the city.
Humanitarian organizations in many countries were involved in collecting aid for Skopje. Thus, Skopje became a city of international solidarity. Immediately after the disaster, the United Nations took up activities to help the devastated city in a planned and long-term way.
At the time when professional teams from the UN began to arrive in Skopje, the headquarters of the international organization said that Skopje will be a monument of human solidarity.
On September 23, 1963, 35 countries asked the General Assembly to put on the agenda of its session an item for taking measures in the event of the earthquake in Skopje.
On September 27, the General Assembly prioritized international action to provide assistance to Skopje. On October 14, after a two-hour discussion, the General Assembly of the United Nations unanimously approved the resolution to provide assistance to the then Yugoslav government during the reconstruction of Skopje./ Kosovapress
