Pakistan’s top court has ordered the release of Yasmin Kausar as it says there are no eyewitnesses linking her to the murder of her businessman husband Mohammed Farooq.
The British woman until recently faced the death penalty for the plot to kill her husband to benefit from his wealth.
The accusations that 62-year-old Yasmin Kausar had connived with one of her husband’s subordinates, 65-year-old Mohammed Farooq, to kill him, were considered “baseless and staged” by Judge Muhammad Tariq Nadeem.
Ms Kausar was arrested after Farooq’s charred remains were found in a garbage dump on April 1.
She was held in a Pakistani prison awaiting trial, facing the death penalty if convicted.
But yesterday the high judge suddenly ordered her release with the argument that “there were no eyewitnesses to make the connection between her and the murder” of the rich businessman.
Prosecutors said two men had testified that Ms Kausar and co-accused Muhammad Idrees were in a car owned by victim Farooq, which was being followed by co-accused Abdul Waheed.
A day later, Mr. Farooq’s body was found inside the burned car, seen by the witness.
Judge Nadeem said there was no evidence linking the accused to the crime, so she should be released.
Speaking to the media for the first time after her release, Ms Kausar said the police had used pressure to extract a confession from her.
She added that “she was not left alone to mourn her husband of 25 years”, and that during her time in prison there had been another death in the family.
Kauser’s daughter Saima, 38, had come from Britain to Pakistan to support her mother.
The prosecution said it will appeal the decision.
