A man has died after being suffocated by a suddenly collapsed sinkhole at the bottom of a swimming pool in a tragic incident in Israel.
The unidentified man, who local media said was in his 30s, was later found at the end of a tunnel about 15 meters below the pool in the central town of Karmei Yosef.
Emergency workers then intervened by erecting a structure to prevent further collapse of the pool and after a four-hour operation managed to recover the body.
Harrowing footage captured the moments when the collapse emptied the pool of water as around 50 people were relaxing next to it.
Several attendants and beach attendants are seen disappearing into the eerie hole in the middle of the pool as attendees run to leave.
Authorities said another man, 34, was also pulled from the collapse pit but escaped with minor injuries after he managed to get out in time.
Police said they were investigating the fatal incident and were checking whether the pool was properly licensed.
Paramedic Uri Damari told the local network Jerusalem Post: “It was a very unusual incident. When I got there, I saw a big hole open at the bottom of the empty pool.”
“People said that the pit had opened suddenly and the pool water had disappeared into it for a few seconds.”
Damari added: “A 34-year-old managed to get out of the pit in time, he had small wounds on his head and limbs.”
A witness told the local channel Channel 12: “The water level started to drop and when the hole opened it created a vortex that sucked two people in.”
Another witness said there were six people in the water at the time of the incident and had shouted for them to get out of the water.
