The biggest music festival in Australia has been canceled by the organizers, after the heavy rain brought the destruction of the place where the concert was to be held.
The entire venue was covered in mud and puddles as fans were excited for the return of Splendor in the Grass, a three-day festival, after a two-year hiatus forced by the pandemic.
But non-stop rain along the New South Wales coast all week has created dangerous conditions in the luxury seaside town popular with Hollywood celebrities.
While canceling Friday’s program, organizers said the weather and staff shortages were all factors that had a negative impact on everything.
About 50,000 people were expected to attend this year’s festival, most of whom paid between A$189 ($130) for a single day pass and A$399 ($275) for three full days.
Photos and videos posted on social media showed murky water and dozens of festival goers wearing protective gear braving the heavy rain.
While much of the world has been inundated during summer heatwaves, Australia has experienced a particularly wet winter, accompanied by flooding along the east coast.
According to CNN, experts have stated that the climate crisis has increased the intensity of rainfall, which was above average.
Devastating floods hit New South Wales, Australia’s most populous state, earlier this month, damaging homes still awaiting repairs from previous floods and forcing businesses to close.
