In his last days as head of state, Ilir Meta visited Kosovo, where he also met his counterpart, Vjosa Osmani. After holding the joint conference. President Meta also gave a speech in the Kosovo Assembly.
As he spoke at length about the close relationship between the two countries, Meta said that he is proud of the achievements so far in Kosovo, such as the construction of democratic institutions, international recognition by most of the member countries of the European Union, NATO and the United Nations, until to the confirmation of independence by the International Court of Justice, membership in regional and international organizations
“When I visited Kosovo in December 2000, then as Prime Minister, I emphasized that relations between Albania and Kosovo need partnership, and not paternalism. Since then, many major developments have taken place. Since the independence of Kosovo, the construction of stable democratic institutions, international recognition by most member countries of the European Union, NATO and the United Nations, until the confirmation of independence by the International Court of Justice, membership in regional organizations and international, full of other achievements. Today, it would be even more absurd to claim paternalism in our relations, when the new state of Kosovo is an example for other countries in the region, including Albania. I continue to believe that our fraternal relations need more stability and inclusiveness, not protagonism or appropriation. Today I appear before you, as a person who has always remained loyal to this philosophy of partnership and cooperation, with deeds and not words, always keeping the door open to every citizen and representative of Kosovo, without distinction, with the desire that relations between our two countries to be fraternal and strategic in the most meaningful way. Everything connects Albania with Kosovo: identity, history, language, faith, culture, traditions, customs, interests, European and Euro-Atlantic perspective. This inseparable connection between Albania and Kosovo has its roots in the blood shed and the sublime sacrifices of the fathers of the nation and our most glorious heroes from Gjergj Kastrioti to Adem Jashari, from Ismail Qemali to Ibrahim Rugova. The renewing force of our relations always lies in the people, across the border. They have protected the commonality of the past, they keep our present and future alive. Therefore, this inalienable will requires an even greater political devotion to cooperate more successfully at all levels and all levels. We have every right to be proud of the achievements so far, but we must also reflect on the underutilized potential for the realization of common goals. We are rightfully proud that we have established a very broad and very good legal basis, but we must measure the success of the cooperation with the most concrete results. We are rightly proud of the interconnection of the road infrastructure through the National Road, for the increase in the exchange of people, goods, capital, for the energy interconnection, but let us accelerate the steps for the expansion of this interconnection also through the railway and port infrastructure”– said Meta.
The president did not leave without mentioning the liberation war of the KLA.
“History gives us every right to be proud of the liberation war of the KLA, but to take care that this war continues to remain unstained, as it deserves. To strongly and unanimously support the just cause and the heroic efforts made by the freedom fighters to protect and free from genocide. The innocence of the leaders who are unjustly found in The Hague today will triumph over any hopeless attempt to turn the aggressors into victims, and the victims into aggressors,” added Meta.
