The favorite candies with the colors of the rainbow have devastating side effects for health, a US court has said in its conclusion, writes the British daily Metro.
Jenile Thames has sued the owners of the Mars company saying they are ‘unfit for human consumption’ as they contain a dangerous chemical called titanium dioxide.
The woman filed her lawsuit in California where she accuses the company of failing to warn customers about the product’s ingredients and thereby misleading them.
Known by the symbol TiO2, titanium dioxide is a coloring ingredient regularly used in candles, candy, toothpaste, and paint.
But the European parliament has banned TiO2 from being used in food since the beginning of the year because of its ability to damage human DNA, which over time can cause cancer.
Mars manufacturing company stated in 2016 that it will gradually eliminate all artificial colors (including TiO2) over five years.
But now after six years the lawsuit says that the company ‘failed in its promise to customers’.
Mars has said that their Skittles candies are manufactured in accordance with the rules of the US food regulator FDA: thus keeping the amount of TiO2 to a minimum.
“Our use of titanium dioxide complies with FDA regulations,” a Mars spokesperson told the network The Washington Post.
Studies show that titanium dioxide, like many other harmful ingredients in personal care products and processed foods, before it is absorbed.
Despite the outcome of the lawsuit, Mars has said it will work to fix the ingredients in Skittles, noting that it can color its candies in bright colors even without using TiO2.
